Water Rites
Flint, Michigan is my home town. Although I’ve lived in many places, it has always been home base, it’s where my parents were born and raised, and my Grandfather toiled in the factories before and after the unions helped to bring fair pay and working conditions.
As an adult, I made my home, my business and my friends in this city — and I’ve seen it go through the changes of the exit of GM, and the havoc that wreaked on the lifestyle and infrastructure of what was a thriving town. I’ve watched as it has been slowly coming back with the strong presence of loyal Flint/oids/ites/stones and of our prestigious universities, and the intelligence that brings, and keeps them in the city. But, with the poisoning of the water supply by mismanagement, and likely, misdeeds, I see an overwhelming hurdle that many may not be able to get past. Even the strongest — and there are a lot of strong people in Flint — are challenged.
For Flint, for our water resources of the wonderful planet, I am creating tributes to H2O, to remember always how beautiful and life-sustaining it is, even as many now live in fear of it, or lack of it.
